Why are we here? What are we? Where do we come from? what is our purpose in this life?
Once in a while in our moments of quiet reflections we ask ourselves these questions. And the way we chose to answer the questions or not answer depend on what we believe or dont believe.
Science states that the Universe: billions of billions of the ever expanding star systems known as galaxies, the planetary systems around many of these stars, comets, asteroids and the dark matter which lies between stars and compose most of space all resulted trillions of years ago from a BIG BANG. And after a while(billions of years ago, our planetary system formed around our star-the sun) and life somehow developed from an inorganic soup in the early earth which happened to just be situated the right distance from the sun, for water to form and exist in the liquid state, an essential for life to exist. And these first replicating prokaryotic life form evolved into the diverse and complex life forms existing today-at the peak of which is you and I, the only life forms that have evolved a consciousness, a sense of self.
That is science.
Religions spin a completely different story. I will give the version of Christianity : There is a God, who is the originator of everything we can see..and not see. He created man, his most wondrous Creation, afer his own likeness. He created man simply for his own pleasure. Thus man has no purpose, no raison d’ĂȘtre without his God. Our stay on earth is only transitory, transient, our real home, our eternal home is some spiritual ( what we cannot perceive with our natural senses) place called Heaven.
Why are we here? How can we find meaning to our lives? - Science would have us believe only what we can perceive, trust in only what we can see, smell, taste, hear or feel. Religion on its part asks us to go through this life on Faith...
